Indian agent, trader, and military commander. Born in New York in 1825, Hatch emigrated to La Crosse?, Wisc., where he engaged in the Indian trade, and reached St. Paul, Minn., in 1843. A railroad agent in 1849, Hatch by 1852 was the clerk of Henry M. Rice, territorial delegate to Congress, 1853-1857. In what would become the state of Montana, the Blackfeet signed a treaty establishing their reservation in 1855. As with many tribes the Blackfeet Reservation did not stabilize with that treaty but was subject to the shifting land demands of settlers, stockmen, and miners. Alfred Cummings was the second governor of Utah territory. He was appointed right after the “Utah War” and, due to exaggerated reports, expected to walk into a tense situation, if not outright rebellion. His and his wife’s writings show they were pleasantly surprised by a congenial reception. Cumming was born in Augusta, Georgia on September 4, 1802.
